The Bedroom

Where we spend a third of our lives, and where the wrong pillow, a tired topper or a room that never quite airs out costs you more sleep than you think. Everything here is read at source: the maker’s own specification, the certificate checked in the register that issued it, and the owner reviews weighted towards the one and two star end.

Five of the six show an OEKO-TEX logo and one publishes the number, which we put through the register. The 1000 thread count is reached by counting the plies inside each yarn, and the brand says so itself. And bamboo is not a permitted fibre name in UK law.

Two of the six are preserved with something that slowly releases formaldehyde, on a product you spray where your face goes. Only one has no alcohol and no parfum in it at all.

A £19 duvet does most of what a £179 one does. We put an ordinary 10.5 tog in the line up to show you why.

Six protectors read against their own specifications, with every certificate number chased through the register that issued it. The cheapest one ties for first.

Four of the six contain no foam and no flame retardant chemistry. The two that do are the only two that will fix a mattress that is too firm.

Measured over twelve months, synthetic pillows carried roughly three times the dust mite allergen of feather ones. The reason is the casing, not the fill.
